C Programming/Variables - Wikibooks, open books for an open world. Like most programming languages, C is able to use and process named variables and their contents. Variables are simply names used to refer to some location in memory . You can think of a variable as being equivalent to its assigned value. So, if you have a variable i that is initialized (set equal) to 4, then it follows that i + 1 will equal 5. Since C is a relatively low- level programming language, before a C program can utilize memory to store a variable it must claim the memory needed to store the values for a variable. This is done by declaring variables. Declaring variables is the way in which a C program shows the number of variables it needs, what they are going to be named, and how much memory they will need. Within the C programming language, when managing and working with variables, it is important to know the type of variables and the size of these types. Since C is a fairly low- level programming language, these aspects of its working can be hardware specific . That is, every variable declared must be assigned as a certain type of variable. Declaring, Initializing, and Assigning Variables. Note that we must specify the type of data that a variable will store. There are specific keywords to do this . In C9. 9 it is allowed to mix declarations and statements arbitrarily . The underscore character (. Names must not begin with a digit. Unlike some languages (such as Perl and some BASIC dialects), C does not use any special prefix characters on variable names. Example C Program: Certificate Store Operations. The certificate and the link are then retrieved from the memory store and the memory is saved to disk. Dynamic Memory Allocation and Virtual Memory by Andrei Milea Virtual Memory - looking 'Under the Hood' Every application running on your operating system has its. Heap memory is slightly slower. Storing constant data in program memory. The CCS C Compiler provides a few different ways to. Some examples of valid (but not very descriptive) C variable names: foo. Bar. BAZfoo. For example, a C compiler might use certain names . Also, some names are reserved for possible future use in the C standard library. The rules for determining exactly what names are reserved (and in what contexts they are reserved) are too complicated to describe here. For now, just avoid using names that begin with an underscore character. The naming rules for C variables also apply to naming other language constructs such as function names, struct tags, and macros, all of which will be covered later. Literals. In the initialization example above, 3 is a literal. Literals can either take a form defined by their type (more on that soon), or one can use hexadecimal (hex) notation to directly insert data into a variable regardless of its type. For now, though, you probably shouldn't be too concerned with hex. The Four Basic Data Types. They are int, char, float, and double. We will briefly describe them here, then go into more detail in C Programming/Types. The int type. An integer is typically the size of one machine word, which on most modern home PCs is 3. Storage for Strings in C. Let us see some examples to better understand above ways to store strings. The memory of stack segment of function should be cleared. Using MRF24W with PIC32 Internal Program Flash Memory For EZ. How to: Store the Results of a Query in Memory (C# Programming Guide). Press F5 to compile and run the program. Examples of literals are whole numbers (integers) such as 1,2,3, 1. When int is 3. 2 bits (4 octets), it can store any whole number (integer) between - 2. A 3. 2 bit word (number) has the possibility of representing any one number out of 4. If you want to declare a new int variable, use the int keyword. For example: intnumber. Of. Students,i,j=5; In this declaration we declare 3 variables, number. Of. Students, i and j, j here is assigned the literal 5. The char type. It stores the same kind of data as an int (i. The size of a byte is specified by the macro CHAR. In standard C it never can be less than 8 bits. A variable of type char is most often used to store character data, hence its name. Most implementations use the ASCII character set as the execution character set, but it's best not to know or care about that unless the actual values are important. Examples of character literals are 'a', 'b', '1', etc., as well as some special characters such as '\0' (the null character) and '\n' (newline, recall . Note that the char value must be enclosed within single quotations. When we initialize a character variable, we can do it two ways. One is preferred, the other way is bad programming practice. The first way is to write. This is good programming practice in that it allows a person reading your code to understand that letter. The second way, which should not be used when you are coding letter characters, is to writecharletter. ASCII, 9. 7 = 'a' */This is considered by some to be extremely bad practice, if we are using it to store a character, not a small number, in that if someone reads your code, most readers are forced to look up what character corresponds with the number 9. In the end, letter. In short, any single entry that is enclosed within 'single quotes'. There is one more kind of literal that needs to be explained in connection with chars: the string literal. A string is a series of characters, usually intended to be displayed. They are surrounded by double quotations (. An example of a string literal is the . It stores real numbers also, but is only one machine word in size. Therefore, it is used when less precision than a double provides is required. Examples are: 3. 1. The float type allows you to store single- precision floating point numbers, while the double keyword allows you to store double- precision floating point numbers . Its size is typically two machine words, or 8 bytes on most machines. Examples of double literals are 3. If you use 4 instead of 4. The distinction between floats and doubles was made because of the differing sizes of the two types. When C was first used, space was at a minimum and so the judicious use of a float instead of a double saved some memory. Nowadays, with memory more freely available, you do not really need to conserve memory like this . Indeed, some C implementations use doubles instead of floats when you declare a float variable. If you want to use a double variable, use the double keyword. If you have any doubts as to the amount of memory actually used by any variable (and this goes for types we'll discuss later, also), you can use the sizeof operator to find out for sure. The return type is size. Here's an example usage: size. The value of sizeof's result is the number of bytes. Note that when sizeof is applied to a char, the result is 1; that is: always returns 1. Data type modifiers. The int keyword need not follow the short and long keywords. This is most commonly the case. A short can be used where the values fall within a lesser range than that of an int, typically - 3. A long can be used to contain an extended range of values. It is not guaranteed that a short uses less memory than an int, nor is it guaranteed that a long takes up more memory than an int. It is only guaranteed that sizeof(short) < = sizeof(int) < = sizeof(long). Typically a short is 2 bytes, an int is 4 bytes, and a long either 4 or 8 bytes. Modern C compilers also provide long long which is typically an 8 byte integer. In all of the types described above, one bit is used to indicate the sign (positive or negative) of a value. If you decide that a variable will never hold a negative value, you may use the unsigned modifier to use that one bit for storing other data, effectively doubling the range of values while mandating that those values be positive. The unsigned specifier also may be used without a trailing int, in which case the size defaults to that of an int. There is also a signed modifier which is the opposite, but it is not necessary, except for certain uses of char, and seldom used since all types (except char) are signed by default. To use a modifier, just declare a variable with the data type and relevant modifiers: unsignedshortintusi; /* fully qualified - - unsigned short int */shortsi; /* short int */unsignedlonguli; /* unsigned long int */const qualifier. It is then not allowed to be changed. While the idea of a variable that never changes may not seem useful, there are good reasons to use const. For one thing, many compilers can perform some small optimizations on data when it knows that data will never change. For example, if you need the value of . For example, you may be writing a program for a grocery store. This complex program has thousands upon thousands of lines of code. The programmer decides to represent the cost of a can of corn, currently 9. Now, assume the cost of a can of corn changes to 8. The programmer must now go in and manually change each entry of 9. While this is not that big of a problem, considering the . To reliably change the price, you have to look at every occurrence of the number 9. C possesses certain functionality to avoid this. This functionality is approximately equivalent, though one method can be useful in one circumstance, over another. Using the const keyword. By declaring a variable const corn at the beginning of a block, a programmer can simply change that const and not have to worry about setting the value elsewhere. There is also another method for avoiding magic numbers. It is much more flexible than const, and also much more problematic in many ways. It also involves the preprocessor, as opposed to the compiler. If you write#define PRICE. The preprocessor performs substitution, that is, PRICE. It is possible, for instance, to #define, say, a macro DOG as the number 3, but if you try to print the macro, thinking that DOG represents a string that you can show on the screen, the program will have an error. It disregards the structure of your program, replacing the text everywhere (in effect, disregarding scope), which could be advantageous in some circumstances, but can be the source of problematic bugs. You will see further instances of the #define directive later in the text. It is good convention to write #defined words in all capitals, so a programmer will know that this is not a variable that you have declared but a #defined macro. It is not necessary to end a preprocessor directive such as #define with a semicolon; in fact, some compilers may warn you about unnecessary tokens in your code if you do. In the Basic Concepts section, the concept of scope was introduced. It is important to revisit the distinction between local types and global types, and how to declare variables of each. To declare a local variable, you place the declaration at the beginning (i. Storage for Strings in CIn C, a string can be referred either using a character pointer or as a character array. Strings as character arrays. You can change str to point something else but cannot change value at present str. So this kind of string should only be used when we don’t want to modify string at a later stage in program. Dynamically allocated in heap segment. Strings are stored like other dynamically allocated things in C and can be shared among functions. Contemporary advertising - definition of Contemporary advertising by The Free Dictionaryn. Best free programs for Windows 8 - Buying Advice. With Windows 8, Microsoft changed its desktop operating system beyond all recognition for many people. But underneath, it’s the same old Windows that you know and love. Here we explain how to use Windows 8, or Windows 8. Windows, as well as how to get to grips with the new Windows interface. First things first, don’t be put off buying a PC or laptop with Windows 8. It’s very easy to jump to the wrong conclusion, which is “I don’t want to learn a new interface, and therefore I don’t want a computer running Windows 8”. It’s arguably a big mistake on Microsoft’s part, partly to have forced the new interface on everyone, and partly because it solely used the new Start screen in all adverts for Windows 8. You can boot straight to the old, familiar desktop and there’s even a start menu of sorts (we’ll explain how to get the old one back below). The best part is that it needn't cost you a penny. See more Windows 8 tips. Best free programs for Windows 8: Taming the tiger. With the Windows 8. Microsoft has addressed some of the main concerns that users found so disconcerting. There is a half return of the Start menu, albeit with a heavy Windows 8 flavour, and revisions to the frustratingly underpowered default programs. In many ways though this just feels like a sticking plaster over the cracks of what still remains a confusingly schizophrenic environment. It seems that for a majority of people the new Start Menu and Modern UI apps are a distraction that they want to disappear rather than embrace. Thankfully this is actually quite easy to achieve. Take a look at our Winodws 8. Best free programs for Windows 8: Start menu. One way to make Windows 8 friendlier is to add the Start Menu back into proceedings. Microsoft seems reluctant to offer this function so soon after taking the huge decision to retire it, but that hasn't stopped some enterprising software developers creating their own solutions. Classic Shell is our favourite, as it offers multiple menu styles, user controllable features, and just works very nicely. Visit the developer's site and download the free app (you can of course make a donation, and if you like it we do encourage you to go back and do so), install it, and then you'll see that a blue and yellow shell has appeared in the left corner of the desktop taskbar. Clicking this opens a window where you can customise how the Start Menu will look, behave, what happens when you press the Windows key, and even the option to boot directly into the Desktop environment. To enable this last feature go to the Basic Settings tab, scroll to the bottom, then ensure the Skip Metro screen box is ticked. If you do find you want to go back to the Modern UI, just right click on the Classic Shell Start Button, choose Settings, then untick the box. One other thing to do is to disable the Windows 8 touchpad gestures, otherwise they'll keep appearing whenever you accidentally drag your fingers in from the sides, causing confusion and annoyance. How you do this varies from machine to machine but usually you'll find the options in Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> Device and Printers> Mouse, then look for a tab that has options for a touchpad. It will most likely be the last one. In here you'll find tick boxes for each gesture, allowing you to keep the ones you want and discard the rest. Replacing them is no problem though, as we'll explore next. Best free programs for Windows 8: Changing default programs. With Classic Shell installed all you need to do to change your default applications is click on the Start button> Default Programs> Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then you can choose the file type - say . Change Program, and select your preferred application. Sometimes you'll find that when you install new software it will request to become the default for the relevant files, saving you having to change it manually. The list of video and audio formats that it can play is frankly ridiculous, and it has the added ability of being able to convert media from one format to another. It also plays DVDs, has deep controls for audio balancing, can enhance video with various effects, and will open broken or incomplete video files from torrent sites. The app is available from www. Windows machine. Best free programs for Windows 8: Music. VLC Media player will handle pretty much any audio file that you throw at it, but it's not a great solution for managing a large music collection. While Xbox Music is a good looking and capable app, certainly one of our favourites from Microsoft, it's still optimised for touch and wants to sell you content. So if you want a desktop native alternative there are several worthy of consideration. Obviously i. Tunes is a hugely powerful option, and one that makes a lot of sense if you have an i. OS device. It's somewhat cumbersome though and doesn't really play nice with Android. Spotify can integrate your music collection with its streaming catalogue, and Google Play Music will copy your music up to online servers (the first 2. Media Monkey. Now on it's fourth major version, this music library manager is a fully featured media centre, with support for a wide range of audio and video formats, playlist capabilities, integrated podcast player, CD ripper, and best of all is compatible with many i. OS, Android, and Windows Phone 8 devices. There's a new beta version that is working out compatibility issues with the very latest Apple hardware, but for everything else it's an impressive piece of software. Best free programs for Windows 8: Photos. When Windows 8 first arrived probably the most disappointing app was Photos. It certainly looked pretty, but was next to useless for even the most basic of editing. If you wanted to remove red- eye or crop an image then you had to send it to Paint, which is frankly ridiculous in this day and age. Thankfully there are many alternatives available, some of which are incredibly powerful. Paint. NET has been around for several years now and is a solid choice for those who want a basic image editor. If you're happy to store photos online then both Google's Picasa and Yahoo's Flickr are excellent options that offer simple editing, large free storage, and of course the ability to share with social media sites. Picasa isn't officially compatible with Windows 8 yet, but we know a fair few people who use it without issue, even so it might be wise to experiment first before committing to the program. For a fully featured editing suite there's always the GIMP which is an open- source Photoshop style application that's hugely powerful. To be honest it's complete overkill if you just want to do quick fixes, and the interface takes a little while to learn, but once you do it's an excellent manipulation suite that can create amazing results. Best free programs for Windows 8: Browser. With more of our daily tasks moving online the choice of browser we use becomes increasingly significant. Admittedly Windows 8 arrives with not one but two versions of Internet Explorer, and while neither is particularly bad we're not overly keen on them either. Google's Chrome has quickly established itself as a fast and robust browser whose simple design does a good job of getting out of your way while you're surfing the web. If you use any of the Google services (and who doesn't?) then you'll find the seamless integration a boon. While Firefox might have slipped down the pecking order in recent years, we've found that its developers Mozilla have got their groove back with the last few updates and are glad to see the old favourite once again being fast and reliable. The various add- on features (including ad- blocker) are also very useful, as long as you don't use too many. With Java and Flash exploits being among the most common attacks, it's useful to have both disabled on your primary browser. Setting up a secondary one with them working means that when you go to a site that requires either program you can simply switch browser, use the site, then shut it down again, minimizing the risk to your machine. Best free programs for Windows 8: Email. The bundled Email app that comes with Windows 8 is stripped down and essentially designed for a tablet. As many users require a little more than this for correspondence there's really only one choice here and that's Thunderbird. Sure there are other clients available, not to mention many of the web- based services, but Thunderbird is powerful, complex without being complicated, and is as solid as a rock. Best free programs for Windows 8: Calendar. For many of us our mobile technology is becoming the primary way to manage our calendars. Therefore it's essential that a service works across all platforms and devices. In this regard Google Calendar really is the way to go. You can have multiple calendars, sync with your partner's one so you know what each other are doing, and access it from anywhere. Best free programs for Windows 8: Games. The Xbox games store in Windows 8 is beginning to fill out a bit more now, with titles like Cut the Rope, Halo Spartan Assault, and of course Minesweeper on offer. For a much wider choice, and desktop native interface, Steam is undoubtedly the top of the list. Run by Valve, the company behind both Half- Life and Portal franchises, it's an excellent source for new and older games. The best part is that the site regularly runs huge sales where you can pick up top titles for surprisingly little money. You'll need to check your system requirements to ensure each game works, but there's no doubt you'll find something to whet your appetite. Best free programs for Windows 8: Office. Windows 8 comes complete with Notepad and Wordpad if you want to open documents or create basic text files. These are perfectly good apps for these purposes, but if you want more capabilities along the lines of Microsoft Office then Libre. Office is an excellent free solution. Active Directory Monitoring - Solar Winds Content Hub. Active directory, commonly known as AD, can be considered the heart of the IT infrastructure. It holds user account information, computers and servers, provides authentication and certificates. It even has tentacles into other application such as Exchange, Skype for Business, Share. Point and can provide SSO with Oracle. Polices within AD can even control remote access into corporate networks. Like any application server that’s critical to your infrastructure you obviously want to monitor it and be alerted when something is wrong. If there’s an issue with active directory that means users are impacted. It can be as bad as not being able to log onto the network or not being able to get to any of the network resources such as file shares or email. A failure in AD can prevent users from logging into Skype for business or even applications that authenticate against AD. When AD is down users cannot log into the system, they can’t work, so forget about checking your email if you can’t even log into your computer. Monitoring Active Directory Performance. Like Exchange Monitoring, AD Performance monitoring is vital because we need to know how the servers are performing. When the servers are slow that could impact the user experience just like an Exchange performance issue. When AD is having any bottlenecks it can impact all the tentacles that it reaches. I've got a Kickstarter going to fund my next book idea. It's going to be titled The 5. Best* College Football Teams of All- Time. The asterisk is very important, as it's not actually about the best teams at all. It's about the teams that were the most interesting, innovative, or impactful. Teams that moved the game forward, or came up just short, or came out of nowhere. You can find the almost complete list of teams at the link above - - they span from 1. Chicago (the first team to master the forward pass) to 2. Auburn (the team that mastered both the spread option and heart- stopping finishes). Only a few programs are represented more than once. I'm excited about the list, and I'm excited about the progress. Please donate if the project sounds interesting. So the book is not about the actual best teams. This week's posts, however, are. Using some of the methods I use for my S& P+ ratings (only, limited to just points scored and allowed), I have crafted estimated S& P+ ratings for every FBS team going back to 1. Michigan and Yale struggled to maintain traction over the latter half of the decade, and only a few programs managed to play consistently. Those that did represented just about every geographical base east of the Rocky Mountains. Minnesota was strong, and new programs from South Bend and Lincoln figured things out quickly. Georgia Tech, Auburn, Vanderbilt and Georgia gave the South some heft, Texas came out of relative nowhere, and Harvard and Georgetown (with six one- loss seasons) kept some of the power on the East Coast. When the war ended, college football was emerging throughout the country. As Minnesota faded, there was no true power base. In 1. 92. 5, Notre Dame became NOTRE DAME. Percentile Rating. Outside of the South, programs kept emerging and fading. Pittsburgh and Fordham fought for Northeastern supremacy, Minnesota surged and slid, and in the sudden USC void, programs like Utah and Santa Clara destroyed local rivals but were too geographically isolated to play many big teams. Army, Navy and Notre Dame stocked up on transfer talent and ruled the sport, but these are decade- long averages - - Army wasn't impressive at the beginning of the decade, and Navy bottomed out at the end. Penn gave the Ivy League one final power run, and Texas' Hardin- Simmons was pretty awesome. Warren Woodson's Cowboys went 2. They were briefly the class of the Border Conference. Avg. By 1. 96. 1, he had won a national title. His program faded a hair near the end of the decade, but with three national titles (and very nearly a fourth), Alabama was the class of football again. A lot of other programs were getting their respective acts together. Ole Miss was still going strong, but Joe Paterno took over for Rip Engle at Penn State, Darrell Royal got rolling at Texas, Frank Broyles fielded his best Arkansas teams, Duffy Daugherty engineered back- to- back AP runner- up finishes at Michigan State, and under Jack Mollenkopf, Purdue went on a hell of a run in the late- 1. USC finished in the AP top two five times, Bo Schembechler's Wolverines caught Woody Hayes' Buckeyes, Notre Dame made a national title run with Dan Devine and Texas was consistently awesome. This was either college football's best or worst decade. This is when coaches took on infallible personas, when schools began stockpiling talent and playing keepaway, and when true brands took shape. Without the 1. 97. But at the same time, it was harder than ever for anyone outside of the balance of power to break down these barriers. There weren't many top- 1. Nebraska was a tragic tale. The Huskers were easily the most consistent power - - Miami and Florida State didn't emerge at a truly dominant level until about 1. Hurricanes were most certainly not the best team in the country when they won the national title in 1. Oklahoma hit an early- 8. Notre Dame hired Gerry Faust, etc. But while Nebraska won at least nine games every single year and went 2. Still, this decade was known for the emergence of Miami and FSU.
